A comienzos del verano del 2002 se inició la construcción de una ruka, casa mapuche hoy desaparecida. La realizaron las comunidades mapuche lafkenche (gente de la costa) del sector de San José de la Mariquina en la región de la Costa.
La iniciativa de la asociación lafkenche responde al sueño que tenían Guillermo Tripailaf y Jaime Lienlaf de volver a recrear los ritos en torno a la ruka: la conversación en mapudungun alrededor de la fogata, el trabajo en comunidad y la comida.

En Arica y en el valle de Azapa viven los descendientes de africanos que fueron llevados a Chile como esclavos a fines de la Colonia y comienzos del siglo XIX.
