Los likan antai o atacameños, pobladores ancestrales de la puna de Atacama, provienen de familias de cazadores- recolectores asentados en ella desde el 9 mil antes de Cristo. Esta cultura en el III d.C experimentó un gran florecimiento cultural. Debido al constante contacto con otras culturas, los atacameños llegaron a dominar 4 lenguas: quechua, aymara, español y kunza, su idioma original hablado hasta fines del s. XIX.
