Anche l'universo è destinato ad avere una fine? Uno dei possibili esiti è il "Big freeze", un'espansione costante combinata ad un lento raffreddamento, durante il quale tutta la materia si disintegrerebbe. Sono possibili anche altri scenari, come il grande collasso ("Big crunch") o un'espansione così rapida dell'universo da causarne una lacerazione: il "Big rip".

La fine del mondo è stata annunciata molte volte, 200 volte negli ultimi due millenni. Ciò significa che dovrebbe esserci stata un'apocalisse ogni dieci anni circa... Ma possiamo davvero prevedere quando finirà il mondo? E cosa vuol dire "fine del mondo", in generale?

La formulazione della "Teoria del Tutto", che dovrebbe descrivere tutte le leggi dell'universo a partire da un unico postulato fondamentale, segnerebbe l'apogeo della fisica e consentirebbe di risolvere misteri che ancora ci resistono. Heisenberg, Einstein, Hawking... Tutti i più grandi scienziati ci hanno provato, sbattendo contro un muro invalicabile. Possiamo ancora sperare?
