L'India ha quasi un miliardo di abitanti, e un reddito 50 volte più basso di quello italiano.
A Bombay nel quartiere di Wadala le case sono minuscole. Nugoli di bambini si affaciano ad ogni porta. Le famiglie sono molto numerose, ma nonostante la mancanza di acqua corrente e di servizi igienici, le ragazze non rinunciano alla toilette mattutina.
A scuola, le classi sono molto affolate: accanto all'inglese si studiano le lingue locali, usate dalla popolazione, che sono 56, scritte anche in alfabeti diversi.
