In 2016, the Welsh Wellbeing of Future Generations Act came into force, a world-first law that created a commissioner to oversee public bodies to ensure they are incorporating a long-term vision in decision-making. decisions. This is a formula to monitor the coherence of public policies and the real progress of ecological transition proposals that aspire to achieve the social, cultural, environmental and economic well-being of future generations.
How does democracy improve by trying to represent those who are not yet born? What tools does the commissioner have to supervise and coordinate the development of public policies? What capacity does he have to promote a multidimensional notion of well-being as opposed to simple economic growth?
Derek Walker is a Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. He was previously director of Cwmpas, the UK's largest cooperative development agency, supporting people and communities to create jobs and strengthen local communities.
Also participating in the debate is Margalida Ramis, president of the Balearic Ornithology Group GOB Mallorca, the entity that promoted the Law on the Welfare of Future Generations of the Balearic Islands, approved thanks to a successful Popular Legislative Initiative.
