Il dramma si sviluppa in una famiglia della Siberia dell'est, dove il popolo khanty vive una vita semplice allevando le renne, fino a quando non viene trovato il petrolio e le grandi compagnie petrolifere cercano di comprare quelle terre da sempre considerate sacre. Lo sciamano Sosho e sua moglie Tohe resistono fino alla fine, ma il loro figlio Petja, che lavora per una delle compagnie petrolifere, persuade il popolo a firmare la cessione delle terre.
