How can food help us build an alternative world? The way we produce, transform, buy and consume food has defined the history of humanity. Virtuously redesigning this cycle can help us shape an alternative future.
Food animates our bodies, homes and societies, cities and rural environments, nature and time: from the cultural norms into which we are born to the personal tastes and preferences that affect our individual health and pleasure, but also the vitality of local economies, global geopolitics and ecology.
This encounter is an opportunity to talk about food and utopias, or food utopias, with Carolyn Steel. After her lecture and subsequent conversation with Nerea Morán, co-author of the preface for the Spanish edition of one of her books, the floor will be opened to questions from the public.
Speakers:
Carolyn Steel, architect, lecturer and writer, explores the inner lives of cities. Her work focuses on developing a lateral approach to urban design that looks at the everyday routines that shape cities and the way we inhabit them. She has run design courses at the London School of Economics, London Metropolitan University and Cambridge University. She is the author of Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives and Sitopia: How Food Can Save the World.
Nerea Morán, architect and lecturer at the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM). She is the author of books like Raíces en en asfalto. Pasado, presente y futuro de la agricultura urbana and Ciudades en movimiento. Avances y contradicciones en las políticas municipalistas desde la óptica de las transiciones ecosociales.
