Jonah who lived in the whale
Jonah is a small child of 4 who lives happily with his family in Amsterdam.
One day the whole family is moved to Westerbork, a village north of Amsterdam which has been transformed into a clearance post for Dutch Jews, then to Bergen-Belsen, a transit camp in Germany where the Nazis keep hundreds of families of different nationalities to exchange them for German prisoners.
Jonah's family is divided and he remains with his mother.
In the camp Jonah grows experiencing violence and pain, but also a kind of normal life thanks to his mother's love. After his father's death they are finally released by the Russians' arrival and sent to a village. Jonah's mother, however, is sent to hospital where she dies insane. The recovery from the terrible experience for Jonah will be hard and long.
