Kim Stanley Robinson has been called the Jules Verne of the 21st century as the sci-fi writer who offers the most detailed and provocative descriptions of future scenarios in which humanity has successfully managed eco-social transitions.

He is also one of the public figures who has long been denouncing the perverse effect of dystopias and defending the need to recover plausible utopias to address the pressing social changes that lie ahead. This encounter is a unique opportunity to listen to him and reflect together on the importance of imagining other worlds from an eco-utopian perspective.

Specifically, we consider the following questions: Have dystopias become conservative and predictable? Does dystopia reconcile us to the present or does it raise our awareness about the need to change it and prompt us to take action? Do we need to recover plausible utopias and activate a political imagination? Why are narratives that show us societies that have successfully managed eco-social transitions useful?

Kim Stanley Robinson is an American sci-fi writer who has won the world’s top awards for the genre. Among his numerous publications, the Mars trilogy, New York 2140, 2312 and the Ministry for the Future are particularly relevant to this series.
